چکیده

Parathyroid adenomas are benign encapsulated neoplasms that are typically comprised of chief cells and feature a rim of normal parathyroid tissue at their periphery. A small subset can be classified as atypical based on the presence of some histologic features of malignancy, such as a trabecular growth pattern, increased mitotic activity, capsular invasion, and fibrous bands, without definitive findings of carcinoma.1

Atypical non-[99mTc]Tc-MIBI avid parathyroid adenoma with a sternal brown tumor, mimicking ectopic parathyroid adenoma in planar and SPECT images: Importance of SPECT/CT acquisition

Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is defined by the excess level of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Parathyroid adenoma is responsible for about 80% of all pHPT. Parathyroid adenoma with cystic feature and atypical pathology is recognized as a rare entity. Technetium-99m methoxy isobutyl isonitrile ([99mTc]Tc-MIBI) scintigraphy has favorable detection rate for ectopic gland as well as th...

Multiple brown tumors in a patient with parathyroid adenoma depicting affinity for both 99mTc -pertechnetate and 99mTc-MIBI: Evaluation with hybrid SPECT/CT

Parathyroid adenoma involving a single parathyroid gland is the underlying cause of 80-85% of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Skeletal system is significantly affected by PHPT. Brown tumors are known to have affinity for 99mTc-MIBI. We report a rare case of PHPT presenting with diffuse bony pain, high calcium level and significantly elevated alkaline phosphatase level. 99m<...

Atypical ultrasound features of parathyroid tumours may bear a relationship to their clinical and biochemical presentation

OBJECTIVES To describe atypical ultrasound features of parathyroid lesions and correlate them with clinical presentation and histopathology. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective review of 264 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who underwent ultrasound imaging prior to parathyroidectomy was performed. Patients with atypical ultrasound findings (n = 26) were identified; imaging findings w...

Atypical Cystic Parathyroid Adenoma Masquerading as a Thyroid Nodule and Presenting with Severe Hypercalcemia

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is the most common cause of hypercalcemia. Majority of cases are related to single gland adenoma. Parathyroid carcinoma, atypical parathyroid adenoma, parathyroid cysts and parathyromatosis are rare conditions that account for approximately 2% of all patients with PHPT. We report an unusual case of severe hypercalcemia due to cystic atypical parathyroid adenom...

Association between atypical parathyroid adenoma and neurofibromatosis.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is a disease characterized by excessive production of parathyroid hormone (PTH), which is due to a parathyroid adenoma in 85% of cases. An atypical parathyroid adenoma, with some histopathological features of parathyroid carcinoma, may be found in some of the cases, although it may not fulfill all the criteria for this diagnosis. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an ...
